My history with capoeira started in the 70s in the favela morro dos cabritos and in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. I was then eight years old. At that time the rodas in the streets were a mix of sheer agility and violence. Anything could happen. I was only a child but already I loved capoeira with its dangers and its mystery. This is maybe because I am, like majority of brazilians, a descendent of slaves, and I viewed capoeira as a game of street urchins, a game full of mischief,which was my escape from the favelas to the real streets of the city. Mestre Lua, and his disciples Sergio Leiteiro, Bebeto Mansueto, Joao Batista dos Santos and others, played a fundamental role in my initiation . With these real masters of the game , of the songs and music of capoeira, I had my first adventures in the rodas and performances in the streets and markets of Rio de Janeiro, which Mestre Lua organized. Without really noticing I became a capoeirista and virtually everything I did became somehow connected with the art of capoeira. I grew up in the favelas and in the streets of Rio de Janeiro that means I grew up with samba and capoeira.Capoeiras legendary masters have enchanted me until the present day and have been objects of my research. Years passed and I have never abandoned the magic universe of capoeira. In 1992 I met Mestre Marrom. The study of the roots and the traditions of capoeira were among my chief goals in life and Mestre Marrom was on the same wave length, researching and paying homage to the old capoeira masters all over Brazil. In 1998 I opened the first european branch of the capoeira school Association Marrom Capoeira e Alunos in Paris which soon after became the School of Capoeira Angola Paris (lECAP). From then on ECAP has been, behind its dedication to capoeira angola, exploring the richness of Afro Brazilian culture. ...The way we work, we try to bring some hope and in fact, a little bit of happiness in the hearts of these children. When we visit a camp like this, where the majority of the people are illiterate, where there are children with Aids, its precarious situation. So, the first thing that comes to my mind is to bring a message of hope. With a little bit of enjoyment and the festivity that Capoeira gives. And to say that there is hope... The Capoeira was created in Bahia by African slaves as a way to defend themselves from abuse, a skill disguised as a pseudo-dance ritual to fool their masters. Today there are Capoeira schools all over Brazil and the world, but especially in Bahia, where slaves were first brought to America, as a way of expressing black pride and keeping their history and culture alive.
