Abstract

This paper explores the representations of the capoeira in articles of the Brazilian press, in the nineteen century. Based on some newspapers, we examine the appearance of the capoeira in the Brazilian society as a product of the politics, social and physics changes in the Rio de Janeiro city, after the arrived of the Portuguese royal family, in 1808. Through the narratives about capoeiras on the city streets, we analyze the relations among several social groups that had contributed to build the face of the country.
